Emotional tears: your body’s natural way of calming down

on October 17, 2013

As tears begin to gather behind your eyes, it can take everything inside you to keep them from falling.

Crying is a sign of weakness for some, but it can also be your body’s way of calming you down.

Let it out. Ugly cry if you have to.  tear_

You will feel better.

Tears serve as the body’s release valve for stress, anxiety, and sadness – feelings that keep you from living a normal life.

When emotional tears are released from the body, hormones are released in the brain.

Biochemist Dr. William Frey found that reflex tears – tears that come while cutting an onion – are 98 percent water, but emotional tears contain stress hormones which leave the body through crying. Emotional tears releases stress hormones and toxins that build up in the body during a stressful situation.  Other studies suggest that shedding tears can stimulate the body’s production of endorphins, our body’s natural pain killer.

Physically releasing something from the body when you are upset can help repress those unwanted feelings.  Crying can give you that same sense of relief.

Let those tears flows, pull yourself together, and keep moving.
